Dr.
S.B.Mujumdar established Symbiosis in the year 1971.
Symbiosis is a term in life science, meaning “Living
together of two different organisms for the benefit of each
other.” Dr. Mujumdar himself being a professor of Botany,
thought this name apt for the institutions.
Thus the institution was founded to alleviate the problems
faced by foreign students coming to India. At that time these
problems included accommodation, meals, medical care, guidance,
coaching, information about the city, etc.
Symbiosis has come a long way since then. Today it is home
to students from more than 60 different countries. These students
are offered the best learning resources, industry exposure,
a strong international students’ alumni network, a global
recognition, and above all, a truly enriching Indian experience.
Symbiosis
today comprises of 33 institutes imparting quality education
in diverse disciplines. It has over 25,000 on campus students
who hail from all states of India and from 63 different countries
and over a hundred thousand students undergoing their distance
learning programme. In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India conferred on Symbiosis the
status of a Deemed to be University.
Dr. Mujumdar has set up “Symbiosis Knowledge Village”
on its university campus at village Lavale, Tal. Mulshi, Dist-Pune,
where foreign and Indian students can live together in hostels,
learn together in classrooms, play together on sports fields
and eat together in cafeterias.
